Causal loop diagrams as a de-escalation technique

Escalation of commitment, the tendency of decision makers to keep on investing in losing courses of action, has been shown to be a costly decision bias that affects many areas of decision making. Even though escalation is a widely studied phenomenon, there has been comparatively little research on how to avoid this bias. The present study focuses on de-escalation of commitment and proposes that causal loop diagrams (CLDs) can help to decrease escalating commitment to a failing course of action. By means of an experiment, this study shows that using a CLD decreases escalation tendencies.     

New particle-loaded monoliths for chiral capillary electrochromatographic separation

Fritless particle-loaded monoliths for chiral capillary electrochromatographic (CEC) separation were prepared. Silica particles containing a chiral selector are suspended in a monomer solution, which is drawn into the capillary followed by in situ polymerization. Thereby the silica-based particles containing the chiral selector are embedded in a nonchiral continuous bed. This kind of chiral stationary phase is inexpensive, easy, and reproducible to prepare and circumvents the preparation of frits. As a model, teicoplanin aglycone as chiral selector bonded to 3 microm silica particles was used. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated by means of the chiral separation of aliphatic and aromatic amino acids and dipeptides. As a further application, the chiral selector ristocetin A bonded to 3 microm silica particles was used for the enantiomeric separation of chiral alpha-hydroxy acids. Since alpha-hydroxy acids migrate toward the anode, a cationic charge-providing agent was copolymerized with the matrix. This served to reverse the direction of the electroosmatic flow (EOF).     

Synthesis and Diels-Alder Reactions of a New Kind of Chiral Dienophiles: Cyclic Vinyl-p-tolylsulfilimines

A new kind of chiral dienophiles, cyclic vinyl-p-tolylsulfilimines (2a and 2b), were obtained from the corresponding (Z)-sulfinylacrylonitriles with HBF(4) and methanol. The asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of optically pure 2a with cyclopentadiene under mild thermal or catalyzed conditions afforded only the endo-4a adduct with complete endo and pi-facial selectivities. The ability of the sulfilimine moiety to enhance the dienophilic reactivity of the double bond is similar to that of the sulfinyl group.     

Phase diagrams of lyotropic cholesteric fluids

Experimental investigations of lyotropic cholesterics fluids are presented which show that changes in the shape anisotropy and chirality of the micellar population determine the topology of the temperature-concentration phase diagrams. For given amounts of the substances which induce the chirality and modify the shape anisotropy of the micelles, two distinct biaxial cholesteric phases are disclosed in the phase diagrams. This is interpreted in the framework of the catastrophe theory of phase transitions.     

The role of Sb in the structure of Sb2O3–B2O3 binary glasses—an NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopy study

Glasses of general formula xSb₂O₃ (1−x)B₂O₃ (0x0.8) have been prepared by conventional melt- quenching. Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that a fraction of the Sb³⁺ is converted to Sb⁵⁺ and this fraction increases with x. High-field ¹¹B MAS NMR gives well-resolved resonances from boron atoms which are 3- and 4-coordinated to oxygen. The fraction of 4-coordinated boron, N₄, goes through a maximum value of 0.12±0.01 at x=0.5. The position of the maximum in N₄ is consistent with the cation potential for Sb³⁺, as observed for other systems. However, the low value of N₄ at this maximum is not so readily explained. The values are similar to those predicted if [BO₄]⁻ were stabilised by [SbO₄]⁺ but the trends with composition are different.
